Aquatic TherapyAquatic therapy combines the benefits of physical therapy and occupational therapy with the advantages of warm-water exercise. Aquatic therapy maximizes the potential for recovery as an integrated part of a complete physical therapy or occupational therapy program. For patients who cannot exercise on land, the aquatic pool is used as a tool to transition to land-based rehabilitation. About the aquatic therapy pool: 16 x 12 three-tiered pool [4', 4'6, and 6' (for NWB exercise)]

Locations: Balance Training/Vestibular RehabDizziness and vertigo are among the most common symptoms causing patients to visit a physician (as common as back pain and headaches). The overall incidence of dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance increases in patients older than 40 years. Falling can be a direct consequence of dizziness in this population, and the risk is compounded in those with other neurological deficits. At Shands Rehab Center, there are physical therapists that are trained to evaluate and help you with your symptoms. The evaluation consists of a clinical examination, which may be followed by eye movement/vestibular function and balance tests. The entire evaluation takes 1 hour. If possible, take no sleeping medications, tranquilizers or dizziness/vertigo medications in the 24-hour period prior to the test. You may wish to have someone drive you to and from your first visit in case you don’t feel steady after treatment. If the cause of the dizziness requires an exercise program, that program will be set up specifically for you. For vestibular problems, this therapy involves vestibular and balance retaining through swift and repetitive exercises of the head, eyes and entire body. After training from the therapist, exercises can be performed at home. Other exercises are used primarily to improve balance. Locations:
Brain and Spinal Cord OT/PT/STSpinal Cord Injury The spinal cord is the major collection of nerves which transmits motor and sensory information from the brain to and from the rest of the body. An injury can damage the nerves, affecting movement and sensation as well as affecting many other body systems such as skin, bowel, bladder, and breathing. The amount of the loss of body function following injury or disease to the spinal cord depends on the level and "completeness" of the injury. PT, OT, and ST are vital in the recovery process post Spinal cord injury. Brain Injury A brain injury may be caused by either a traumatic or non-traumatic event, resulting in a change in neuronal activity in the brain that ultimately affects the way brain cells function. This injury may produce a diminished or altered state of consciousness that, as a result, impairs an individual's cognitive and/or physical abilities. A brain injury may also have an impact on behavioral or emotional functioning. These impairments may be either temporary or permanent, and cause either partial or total functional disability or psychosocial maladjustment. Stroke Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke. Risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, inactivity, high cholesterol, poor diet, diabetes, smoking, and genetics. Strokes, or brain attacks, are a major cause of death and permanent disability. They occur when blood flow to a region of the brain is obstructed and may result in death of brain tissue. There are two main types of stroke:

Cardiac Related DisordersAddresses long-term lifestyle issues in patients with a history of cardiac-related conditions. Services do not require ECG monitoring or a physician present. A physician must clear you to participate in physical therapy prior to being scheduled if you have had a cardiac event within the past 8 months. The program will help you practice and keep healthy behaviors and habits to continue to improve your existing heart condition or to keep your risk of heart disease low. Physical Therapy will address weakness and assist with capacity building. Often, therapists will be consulted for other diagnoses in patients with heart-related conditions, so it is very important that you bring a list of current medications and a thorough record of your past medical history to your first appointment. Driving EvaluationsShands Driver Rehabilitation Program is located at Shands Rehab Center Magnolia Park. The driver rehabilitation program has been in existence since 1988 and is designed to assist individuals to return to driving after illness or injury, to assess driver safety for mature drivers, or teach new drivers with a disability to drive. The program consists of an initial pre-driving assessment that screens an individual’s physical, cognitive, and visual perceptual abilities. The second part of the evaluation involves a behind the wheel on the road assessment in a vehicle equipped with safety features and any necessary adaptive equipment. Finally, the individual participates in an exit interview to discuss the outcome of their evaluation and any necessary recommendations, which may include equipment recommendations, behind the wheel training, or mobility planning for the future. The evaluations are typically 2-3 hours in length and require the medical approval of the client’s physician. The program is open to licensed drivers or those with a learners or temporary permit. The program also provides pre-driving assessments for non-licensed drivers to assist individuals in determining their potential to drive. Locations:

PilatesPilates rehab is based on the Pilates principles of core control, spinal elongation, and pain-free non-destructive movement. OSMI has a Pilates reformer and tower bar to assist in pain free movement re-education. OSMI’s certified Pilates instructor will focus on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breathing and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles. Locations:
Pulmonary rehabAny patient who has a lung problem and shortness of breath that is limiting their activities would benefit from Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Patients with breathing difficulty and lung problems become short of breath with daily activities and exertion. This often limits overall activities and thus contributes to weakness. This can lead to shortness of breath with even basic functions of daily life. Before long, they have given up all their activities and just getting ready for the day is all they can handle. Our rehab team will help educate patients with pulmonary disorders on compensatory strategies, energy conservation and better breathing techniques, nutrition, stress management, managing anxiety, preventing infections to prevent hospitalizations, and beginning an individual home exercise program. Patients learn how to live an active life within the limitations of their disease. Patients are monitored by licensed Physical Therapists during their individualized rehab sessions. Locations:
Therapeutic Seating/Wheelchair evaluationsShands at Magnolia Parke offers an adaptive seating clinic that performs both adult and pediatric evaluations for mobility devices, along with modifications and repairs of current equipment. Mobility devices include manual wheelchairs, scooters, power wheelchairs and strollers. Patients are evaluated by a physical therapist or an occupational therapist to determine which type of mobility device will meet the specific patient’s needs. The goal for the seating clinic is to make the patient as independent as possible with mobility and daily activities within the home environment. The therapist works closely with a wheelchair vendor to ensure that the proper equipment is ordered. Patients are seen back at the clinic for the delivery of the equipment so the therapist can assess the fit of the mobility device and make adjustments as necessary. Locations:
TMJ joint DysfunctionTemporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) are often associated with headache, facial pain, limited jaw function, limited TMJ range of motion, clenching and grinding of teeth and poor posture. TMJ disorders may cause pain in front of the ear and clicking or popping noises when chewing, talking or yawning. Tenderness and pain in the muscles used for chewing and talking as well as muscles of the neck and shoulder girdle which support head and neck posture may be presenting complaints as well. Physical therapy interventions for neck pain, TMJ dysfunction and headaches include flexibility and strengthening exercise programs, postural re-education for normal alignment during work and recreational activities; education to decrease stress and tension on TMJ and associated structures and manual therapy to reduce fascial restrictions, muscular tightness and joint restrictions. Physical therapists work closely with dentists, physicians and other health care providers for a comprehensive approach to the problems associated with TMJ, headache, facial pain, neck pain and postural dysfunction.
