Heart and Lung Transplantation

Our high success rate is only one of the reasons patients come to Shands at UF for organ transplantation. We also provide highly personalized patient care and education to patients, families, case managers and referring physicians about follow-up care, which is crucial to the survival of the transplanted organs.

These qualities draw transplant patients from throughout the Southeast and make us one of the United States’ top 20 transplant centers for all organs and a Center of Excellence.

Multi-specialty teams perform both adult and pediatric transplants. For the heart, a transplant may be required to repair either congenital or acquired diseases. For the lungs, a transplant may be needed for patients born with cystic fibrosis or other diseases that have left a person with severe breathing difficulties.
