Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common
cancer in men, excluding skin cancers. One in six men will be
diagnosed with prostate cancer during their life, but only one
in 30 men will die from this cancer.
The prostate, a gland found only in men, is located in front
of the rectum. The prostate produces some of the seminal
fluid that protects sperm in semen. Most prostate cancers
develop from the glandular cells, called adenocarcinoma.
Signs and symptoms
- Weak or interrupted urine flow
- Inability to urinate
- Difficulty starting or stopping urine flow
- Blood in the urine
- Pain or burning during urination
- Continual pain in lower back, pelvis or upper thighs
- Abnormal PSA blood test
These symptoms may be a result of benign conditions such as infection
or prostate enlargement. Beginning at age 50, men should
have a regular PSA blood test.
