By signing up for our email advocacy campaign, you can help us continue to provide healthcare services. Proposed Medicaid cuts threaten Shands’ ability to provide charity careShands HealthCare is joining hospitals across Florida and the nation to fight a federal proposal that would slash supplemental Medicaid payments to safety-net providers. The Florida Hospital Association estimates the proposal will cost Florida's hospitals more than $4 billion over the next five years and dramatically effect Shands’ and other public and safety-net hospitals’ ability to provide care to vulnerable patients, including the under- and un-insured. "The rule would devastate Florida’s supplemental-payment program, reducing payments by about 80 percent," said Senior Vice President and General Counsel Paul Rosenberg, who oversees Shands’ government-relations efforts. "Shands will receive $123 million in supplemental payments system wide this fiscal year. If the rule is implemented, we anticipate Shands would only receive $17 million next year – that’s a $106-million cut." The federal agency that oversees the Medicaid program is moving forward with the rule despite opposition from a majority of both houses of Congress. Hospitals are asking Congress to stop implementation of this rule. This is not the first time hospitals have had to oppose measures to decrease funding needed to care for the un- or underinsured. With support from the community, we’ve been successful in the past. |
